Let's talk about how to balance a busy job with staying healthy.
What's the most challenging part for you?
Do you struggle with finding time, staying motivated, eating well, and exercising regularly?
Or are there other things getting in your way?
Even though it's 2024 and life is more demanding than ever, it's essential to prioritise wellness in your busy schedule. Healthy habits can help manage stress, improve mood, and boost self-confidence.
So, let's address this together today.
Drawing from my personal journey, maintaining a consistent fitness regimen for over 13 years hasn't been smooth sailing. Still, the benefits of stress reduction, increased productivity, and more energy have made it worth every effort.
If I can achieve this balance, you certainly can, too!
Achieving a healthy lifestyle amidst a busy schedule comes down to three primary components: Goals, Habits, and Mindset. Do any of these resonate with you?
Goals can give our fitness clear direction and purpose. Instead of setting broad goals such as "I want to lose weight", we could set more specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound (SMART) goals like "Lose 10 KG in 3 months" or "Climb 4 flights of stairs without pausing to catch my breath".
Having clear fitness goals can keep up our motivation and allow us to track progress effectively. If you're unsure what target to set, you can research realistic achievements or use your past attempts. Failing to set reasonable goals can make it challenging to measure progress, which may lead to demotivation.
Habits contribute significantly to consistency and results. Developing habits that align with your goals and finding ways to stick to them sounds like a plan. For instance, practices such as balanced eating, consistent workouts, restful sleep, and tracking progress could be beneficial. Scheduling our health habits can lead to better compliance.
Did you know that you can lose weight without actually hitting the gym? Hear me out. 🙌🏽
The main factor determining weight or fat loss is how much food you consume compared to your body's needs.
Eating less than your body needs will start burning the stored fat to get the energy it needs.
Exercising can also help by making your body burn more calories, but it's not as effective as eating less. For example, you can burn only 400 calories in an hour of aerobics, while 10pcs of the Nigerian snack [puff puff] can have 500 calories or more.
That's right, one snack can have more calories than an hour of exercise! So, to lose weight, you must watch what you eat and ensure you don't overeat, even if you exercise.
Some questions for you.
What are some of your existing health habits?
Are they helping to achieve your goals? If not, it may be time to change them.
Do you track your fitness goals and habits? If not, you need to start.
See how I track my fitness habits to stay consistent.
Lastly, our Mindset can make or break our journey towards a healthier lifestyle. Do you ever find yourself saying things like:
"I can still make heaven even if I am fat". 😁
"I can't change, it runs in my family"?
"Fitness is just not for me."
Or my personal favourite, "YOLO - You only live once."
My counsel is to adopt the mentality of learning from those who successfully lead a healthy lifestyle because many unrealistic narratives about fitness on social media can drive you crazy, so be mindful of what you are consuming.
As a busy professional, you are probably short of time, so you need a strategy that gets the best of the time you have. In my view, trial and error are exercises in frustration, so investing time and resources in learning what works for you and your realities is essential.
In conclusion, the road to achieving wellness in your busy schedule may seem steep initially. Still, once you begin the journey, it gradually becomes a customary part of your daily life. What's one small step you could take today towards a healthier lifestyle?
